"Free Fridays" Fast Lane (Funk, Soul, R&B)

Fast Lane (photo by Suzanna Mars).jpg

Funk music is a genre which originated in the 1960s when African-American musicians created a new style of music that combined R&B, soul and jazz. Rather than focusing on melody and harmony, funk features a rhythmic groove of electric bass and drums. Fast Lane loves to get in that groove, and loves to get people dancing. As their slogan says, “Take off your feet belt and dance to the rhythm and groove of Fast Lane!”

Fast Lane features Scott "Skyntyte" Free (lead vocals and lead guitar). Skyntyte’s credentials include tutelage under rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Bo Diddley and Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist, Bernie Worrell. The list of artists he has shared the stage with includes Chic, Teddy Pendergrass, Stephanie Mills and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Vernon "Dr. Rockenstein" Montoya (keyboards) studied music theory at Boston College, and is an accomplished jazz pianist, playing in various musical combinations since childhood. Deby Starr is Fast Lane’s female vocalist. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Starr has mastered many genres, including rock, blues, soul and jazz. She previously sang with several Gainesville bands, including Redeye, Fabulous Comatones, Crisis, ClassX and NdGO. Greg Mullins Sr. (bass) hails from Brooklyn, New York, and his musical background was steeped in funk. He has studied with bass great Marcus Miller, and has played with Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band) and Victor Wooten (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones). Keith “Kool Breeze” Whitesel (drums, vocals) is originally from Texas, and previously performed with his family around the country, including at Disney World. His drumming is well-versed in funk, R&B, rock and jazz. He previously played with local bands GruvTherapy and NdGO.

“Free Fridays” is presented by The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department and funded in part by a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council. The entire “Free Fridays” 2019 schedule can be viewed at www.freefridaysgnv.com.  The Bo Diddley Plaza is located at 111 E. University Ave. in downtown Gainesville. Closing out the celebration of June as national African-American Music Appreciation Month, “Free Fridays” hosts popular reggae band, De Lions of Jah, to play a concert Friday, June 28, at 8 p.m. The Jacksonville, Florida band has been dubbed “the best reggae band in Duval County.”

Following in the footsteps of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Steel Pulse and Morgan Heritage, De Lions of Jah fuses traditional roots music with contemporary dance hall and dub influences. The soul of the band and lead vocalist Dave “Da General” Philip is originally from Antigua, which is located in the West Indian Islands. Da General is an experienced reggae vocalist who has produced many CDs over the last 10 years, providing listeners with raspy harmonic chanting and soul-moving songs. He also possesses the ability to sing like classic reggae vocalists of the past, as well as chant live. He displays contemporary dancehall styles that make for a very entertaining and compelling show.

Da General is joined by a talented group of experienced reggae musicians that together make De Lions of Jah an overall deep-rooted reggae band featuring original music and covers.  The band boasts three self-made and promoted CDs which yielded original recordings like fan-favorites “MUSIC” and “I-95.” The message that De Lions of Jah hopes to spread is awareness and consciousness to the masses, with the sole purpose of uplifting hearts and helping “people to see the need for peace and love” in these difficult times.

A celebration of African-American Music Appreciation Month occurs every Friday night in June at the Bo Diddley Plaza as part of the “Free Fridays” concert series. Inspired by the dream of late local musicians Richard Baxter and Roland Burns, African-American Music Appreciation Month has been celebrated in Gainesville since 1998.

Kicking off this year’s celebration on Friday, June 7, is Little Jake Mitchell and The Soul Searchers, featuring old school blues and rhythm and blues artist Jake Mitchell. Mitchell is a veteran musician who includes B.B. King as one of his mentors, and who went on the road with James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye and the Bobbie Blue Band. His first record was with Chess Records in 1957 on the same master tape as Chuck Berry. Mitchell’s band, Little Jake and the Blenders, was the first African-American group to perform at a Gator Growl celebration in 1960. In 1965, Mitchell performed at the Apollo Theater in New York. He recorded with Impact Records in Detroit, Michigan, releasing the songs titled "Work with me Anne," "Not a Chance in a Million" and "I've Gotta Know." In 1975, he recorded "You Can Make It If You Try" with Newtown Records, the same label as Patti Labelle and the Bluebells. Mitchell also owned his own record company (Golden Hit Productions) in Detroit from 1966 to 1972. Mitchell, who now resides in Gainesville, Florida, is also popular in England where his recorded music is often played in UK northern soul dance halls.

Along with Jake Mitchell (lead vocals), the Soul Searchers include Brian Stevens (trombone), Charles Steadham (saxophones), Doug Meyers (trumpet), Rob Rothschild (drums/percussion), Lavelle Whitfield (drums/percussion), Allen McCollum (bass), Tran Whitley (keyboards, back-up vocals), Bruce Brashear ( Hammond B3 organ), Charles Henry (guitar, back-up vocals), Levi Griffin Jr. (guitar, back-up vocals) and Kenny Eunice (master of ceremonies).

African-American Music Appreciation Month at “Free Fridays” also features Fast Lane (funk, soul, R&B) on Friday, June 14; The Shakedown (blues, rock) on Friday, June 21; and De Lions of Jah (reggae) on Friday June 28

“Free Fridays” is presented by The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department and funded in part by a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council. "Free Fridays" A Tribute to Stephen Stills

– Mick Marino, Mark Miale, Tony McMahon and Friends play a tribute to the music of Stephen Stills at the “Free Fridays” Concert Series at Bo Diddley Plaza in downtown Gainesville Friday, May 31 from 8-10 p.m.

As a member of two iconic groups, Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills and Nash, Stephen Stills was the first person to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice on the same night. For Buffalo Springfield, he wrote the protest song "For What It's Worth" that became one of the best-known songs of the Sixties. He is ranked #47 on Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time. Stills lived in Gainesville in the ’50s and early ’60s and in December 2018, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Music from the University of Florida.

Mick Marino (guitar/vocals), Mark Miale (guitar/vocals) and Tony McMahon (guitar/vocals) are joined by Rob Rothschild (drums), Brad Bangstad (keys) and Ron Thomas (bass) for this special tribute concert. An opening set of Stills’ songs is played by the acoustic duo Gregg Doles and Jim Evans.

Says Marino about Stephen Stills, “We all have grown up on Stills’ music starting from the 1960s. He is an incredible songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and keyboard player. His music will leave a mark on history just as someone like Mozart did. There is no doubt. When you have played in monumental bands like Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills and Nash, Manassas with Chris Hillman from the Byrds and of course with Neil Young on so many projects, there is no way you could not be included in the annuls of music history forever. He left a big mark on all the musicians I know and perform with.”

The Stephen Stills Tribute concert is one of the select “Free Fridays” classic rock concerts that are sponsored by classic rock radio station WIND-FM (92.5, 95.5, 107.9).

“Free Fridays” is presented by The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department and funded in part by a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council. "Free Fridays" Bridget Kelly Band (Blues)

Bridget Kelly & Tim Fik (photo by Suzanna Mars).jpg

Inspired by classic and electric blues, the Bridget Kelly Band has placed their unique stamp on the blues genre with high-energy live performances, and a hybrid sound that mixes Texas and Memphis blues with various southern blues traditions. The sultry vocals of singer Bridget Kelly and the incendiary lead guitar work of Tim Fik forge a signature hybrid sound that combines female urban blues with riff-driven rockin' blues guitar. Other band members include a dynamic rhythm section comprised of Mark Armbrecht and Greg Mullins on bass and  Tim Mulberry on drums.

The Gainesville-based band has been performing at blues clubs and festivals throughout the U.S. Recently, they appeared at the Women in Blues (WIB) Showcases in Memphis, Tennessee during the International Blues Challenge (IBC) week, and at the May 2018 WIB showcase in Gainesville, Florida. Guitarist Tim Fik is a 2018 recipient of a Keeping the Blues Alive Award from the Blues Foundation for his contributions to blues education.

The Bridget Kelly Band was an IBC semi-finalist in 2015 and 2016, and ranked No. 3 in a Women in Music poll conducted by Blues-E News in July 2015. Their second CD, "Forever in Blues" (June 2014), helped the group gain serious media attention, with positive reviews from music critics in the U.S. and Europe, and regular airplay on Sirius XM radio’s B.B. King's Bluesville channel. The group's "Outta the Blues" (May 2016) rose to No. 11 on the Contemporary Blues Chart in 2016, hit No. 1 on the Roots Music Radio (RMR) Electric Blues Album Chart for six weeks in July and August 2016 and was the No. 4 RMR Electric Blues album of the year. Favorable reviews and steady airplay on XM radio, Pandora, Spotify, Jango, and internet radio have helped to expand the band's international fan base.

In June 2017, the Bridget Kelly Band released their fourth all-original music album, "Bone Rattler," on Alpha Sun records. The album was No. 1 on the RMR Electric Blues Album Chart for 24 weeks. The band's newest CD "Blues Warrior" (released in May 2018) was a top-10 charting RMR Blues-Rock Album and the No. 1 RMR Music Album in the State of Florida in June 2018.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department presents Gypsy jazz band Hot Club de Ville Friday, May 17 from 8-10 p.m. at Bo Diddley Plaza in downtown Gainesville. The public is invited to bring their blankets and lawn chairs to our beautiful downtown amphitheater and enjoy this free concert under the stars.

Hot Club de Ville plays in the style of Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club de France. Quintette du Hot Club de France was a jazz group founded in France in 1934 by guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. One of the earliest and most significant jazz groups in Europe, the Quintette was described as "one of the most original bands in the history of recorded jazz." Their most famous lineup featured Reinhardt, Grappelli, bassist Louis Vole and rhythm guitarists Roger Kaput and Joseph Reinhardt (Django’s brother), who filled out the ensemble's sound and added occasional percussive effects.

It's amazing what the human body can do if you take care of it. Every Thursday at 6pm spend an hour being kind to yourself with CYT Jackie Morone in this FREE combination Hatha/Vinyasa yoga class. Our focus will always be on basic postures and breathing techniques, but I like to incorporate a few dynamic poses for fun and challenge! Beginner yogis are encouraged but all levels are welcome to join. Please dress comfortably, bring a yoga mat, any props you may need, water, and an open heart. Donations appreciated. Hope to see you there!
