"Free Fridays" 70's Progressive Rock Experience

Brad Bangstad (photo by Suzanna Mars).jpg

The Progressive Rock Experience pays tribute to ‘70s progressive rock at Bo Diddley Plaza in downtown Gainesville Friday, Aug. 30 from 8-10 p.m.

The band, put together by Brad Bangstad (keyboards) especially for a “Free Fridays” concert last year, was such a success that they are back again this year by popular demand! Joining Bangstad are Rob Rothschild (drums), David Ottenberg (bass), Linda Griffith (lead vocals), Shuri Pass (lead vocals), Don David (lead vocals/guitar), Fagan Arouh (guitar) and Aaron Culverson (violin).

Progressive rock grew in popularity in the ‘60s and ‘70s, employing compositional techniques used in classical or jazz music, and often highlighting instrumental and/or vocal virtuosity.  The playlist for the concert includes songs by Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Deep Purple, Genesis, Kansas, Styx, Head East, Supertramp, Uriah Heep, Eric Carmen/Raspberries and Elton John.

Bangstad says, “Not all of these songs are progressive rock, but still great rock anthems mostly from the 1970s.  A lot of these songs are technically challenging, and really stretches our musical abilities.”

The Progressive Rock Experience concert is one of the select “Free Fridays” classic rock concerts that are sponsored by classic rock radio station WIND-FM (92.5, 95.5, 107.9).

"Free Fridays" The Nancy Luca Band and Anna Marie (Classic Rock)

Anna Marie & Nancy Luca (photo by Suzanna Mars).jpg

The City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department presents the Nancy Luca Band with Anna Marie as part of the “Free Fridays” Concert Series Friday, Sept. 6 from 8-10 p.m. at the Bo Diddley Plaza. The public is invited to bring their blankets and lawn chairs to our beautiful downtown amphitheater, and enjoy this free concert under the stars.

Nancy Luca lives the life she sings about in her rock anthem entitled "I Play Guitar." She got her first Stratocaster guitar while attending Gainesville’s Buchholz High School. In 1974, she took guitar lessons from future Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, and has been playing ever since.  She was a mainstay playing at Gainesville’s Dub's, Main St. Bar and frat parties in the late ‘70s and ‘80s.  In 1990, she moved to Los Angeles with her best friend, Anna Marie, and still lives there now.  Anna Marie, who now lives in Gainesville, is locally-known for her band Anna Marie and Friends. Luca still considers Gainesville home, and continues to return several times a year to play with her bandmates from the Nancy Luca Band.  They include Larry Thompson, a well-known Gainesville drummer, who also teaches at the Gainesville Guitar Academy; Joe Loper, a fellow Buchholz graduate, on bass guitar; and vocalist Anna Marie, who Luca describes as “a lead singer with attitude.”  Luca continues that “the camaraderie of these best friends creates an atmosphere of peace, love and searing lead guitar.”

Luca currently plays in the bands git'ERdone, Whole Lotta Rosies, Ashleigh Flynn and the Riveters, Madame Ozzy and Mistress of Reality. She has played abroad in Bosnia, Korea, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Croatia and Canada. She is also a guitar instructor, audio engineer and songwriter. She won the Rock City Music Award Best Female Guitarist in 2005, and her band Whole Lotta Rosies won the Rock City Music Award Best Female Tribute Band in 2004 and 2005.

Musician and former Gainesville mayor Gary Gordon says, “Nancy Luca by herself is rock ‘n’ roll incarnate. It doesn't take a whole band. Maybe it's because she's not only talented but also because she started young, but that guitar is part of her. It walks, it talks, it postures, it jokes, it wails, it moans, it begs, it teases, it demands, it cries out for more, it strokes, it caresses… Nancy was (and still is) not only great, she was one of the first, if not the first, woman guitarist in the territory.”

The Nancy Luca Band is one of the select “Free Fridays” classic rock concerts that is sponsored by classic rock radio station WIND-FM (92.5, 95.5, 107.9).

"Free Fridays" A Tribute to the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock

Relics 2018 (photo by Suzanna Mars).jpg

Only one rock concert made such a huge and lasting impression that an entire generation was named for it. Fifty years ago, more than 400,000 members of the Woodstock generation gathered in upstate New York to celebrate “three days of peace and music.”

“Free Fridays” Concert Series, is presenting a Woodstock tribute concert on Friday, August 16, at 8 p.m.at Bo Diddley Plaza to also celebrate peace and music. The concert is the brainchild of local musician Bob McPeek, who originally proposed the idea to “Free Fridays” coordinator David Ballard 10 years ago for the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. For that concert over 3000 attendees, many dressed in tie dye and other 60’s garb joined the celebration. This 50th .anniversary edition has all of the band members from 10 years ago returning for an even bigger celebration.

Says McPeek, “The first overnight trip I took without an adult or parent was to Woodstock. I was just 17. Seeing The Who play at dawn made me realize that I wanted to make music my life. Ten years ago we celebrated the cultural watershed of Woodstock with the largest crowd ever to attend a “Free Fridays” concert. It was amazing! It is a privilege and delight to do this again with my good friends and a fabulous crowd. We invite everyone to join the Woodstock generation!”

Joining McPeek (guitar and vocals) on stage are The Relics, an impressive cast of some of Gainesville’s finest musical talent. They include Janet Rucker (guitar and vocals) who also attended the original Woodstock, Fagan Arouh (guitar and vocals), David Ottenberg (bass and vocals), Rob Rothschild (drums and percussion), Brad Bangstad, (keyboards and vocals), Cathy DeWitt (piano and vocals), Dan Tampas (guitar and vocals), and Michelle Ott (vocals and percussion). Noted actor and singer Gregg Jones will serve as MC, Woodstock announcer and vocalist.

The Relics Woodstock Tribute concert is one of the select “Free Fridays” classic rock concerts that are sponsored by classic rock radio station WIND-FM (92.5, 95.5, 107.9).

"Free Fridays" The Duppies (SKA / Reggae)

DUPPIES (photo by Suzanna Mars).jpg

The Duppies are a high-powered, seven-piece band formed in Gainesville in 2004. Since that time, this popular ska, rocksteady and reggae band has received the attention of audiences beyond the local scene by touring throughout the United States. Band members include The Duppies founder, Brian Hiebel (lead vocals/percussion), Tony Farah (bass), Ryan Bonner (keyboards), Daniel Kinney (drums), Chris Chiares (guitar) and Jose Pineiro (sax/backing vocals).

Ska music was born in Jamaica in the 1950s, predating rocksteady and reggae. It combines the Jamaican folk music styles mento and calypso with jazz and R&B. Ska frequently resurfaces in popular culture infused with different music genres. One of the most successful recent combinations is ska and punk, which achieved its greatest popularity in the 1990s. In the mid-1960s, ska transformed into the more sophisticated sounding rocksteady, which emphasized a heavy base line and finally, by the end of the decade, into the more familiar reggae form.

The band’s name is taken from the Jamaican word duppy, which in Jamaican folklore is described as “an unruly spirit risen from a consecrated grave; a ghost; a poltergeist.” The Duppies say their music has been known to send audiences into “frenetic dancing spasms that can only be described as musical convulsions of the soul.”

"Free Fridays" Captive Eddies (Original Rock, Reggae & Roots)

Captive Eddies.jpg

Captive Eddies' influences span from classic rock, reggae, blues, folk, funk, classical bluegrass and jazz.

At 13-years-old, the twin brothers, Leaf and Deva Blanchard, along with their childhood friend Jody Moore, began playing music together. What started as a race to see who could learn music the quickest soon became a lifelong ambition to create and share good music. After absorbing everything they could from the musicians around them, they found Richy Stano, who had just spent 10 years as a staff instructor at the Guitar Institute of Technology. The three boys studied music under Stano for five years, simultaneously honing their unique styles and songwriting abilities. Eddie Fields, an exceptionally talented blind drummer, joined the boys 12 years ago for a recording session. The chemistry between them was immediately evident, and Fields has been an integral part of the band since that day.

Presently, Captive Eddies pulls from a reservoir of more than 100 original songs, and has performed at festivals and venues from Florida to New York to California, as well as many places in between. Their latest album, “Simple Dream” (released in 2014), features guest artists that include Byron House, Larry Atamumeak and Brent Truit. Byron House has worked with a long list renowned musicians including Eric Clapton, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Larry Atamumeak is known for his work with Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck and Sheryl Crow. Brent Truitt, who produced and played on “Simple Dream,” is a multi-platinum Grammy award-winning musician.
Captive Eddies says “music is rooted firmly in conscious lyrics that are not afraid to face the darkness in order to bring light to every aspect of the human heart.” They are spending 2019 doing community work, and touring internationally to promote their upcoming album, "Awake."

Captive Eddies are Deva Blanchard (guitar, mandolin, bass, vocals), Jody Moore (guitar, bass, vocals),
Leaf Blanchard (bass, guitar, vocals) and Eddie Fields (drums, keys).

"Free Fridays" A Tribute to the Early Laurel Canyon Music Scene

Other_Voices_CSNY_promo_photo credit Shirley Rodriguez_1.jpg

The band, Other Voices and Friends, will present California Dreaming, a tribute to the early Laurel County music scene on Friday, July 19. In the late ‘60s, some of the best musicians of their generation took up residence in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon, a mountainous neighborhood in the Hollywood Hills.  California Dreaming plays tribute to some of those artists with covers of The Mamas and the Papas, The Byrds, The Monkees, Linda Ronstadt, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Other Voices has been delighting fans for 18 years with a winning combination of instrumental chops and exquisite vocal harmonies.  This Gainesville acoustic quartet features an eclectic mix of genres with their own songwriting and also mines a rich vein of vintage pop songs. The band includes Fagan Arouh (guitar and vocals), Dan Tampas (guitar and vocals), Michelle Ott (vocals and hand percussion) and Alan Hill (bass). Joining the quartet for this Laurel Canyon tribute are Brad Bangstad (keyboards and vocals) and Rob Rothschild (drums), both from several other noted local bands, including The Impostors and The Relics.

The California Dreaming concert is one of the select “Free Fridays” classic rock concerts that are sponsored by classic rock radio station WIND-FM (92.5, 95.5, 107.9).

"Free Fridays" A Tribute to The Music and Events of 1969

Summer of '69 (photo by Suzanna Mars).jpg

A concert highlighting the music and significant events of 1969 will play at Free Fridays on July 12. The show will cover popular hits of 1969 such as Bad Moon Rising, Honkey Tonk Women, Get Together, This Magic Moment, Put a Little Love in Your Heart, Hooked on a Feeling, Age of Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In and more.

According to Tran “The Piano Man” Whitley who created the show, “Back at the dawning of the Age of Aquarius a funny thing was happening: Some of the best music of my life was being created and performed. Was there something in the air? Was it the high-octane and velocity of youth? Was it the dreadfulness of war or the excitement of scientific achievement? Perhaps it was the roiling of our political system. Whatever it was, music artists were churning out big-time hits that still resonate in today’s world. My show is designed to highlight the best of those songs and revisit the tone and tenor of a magical moment in time, 1969.”

Joining Whitley (keyboards and vocals) to help re-create that magical moment in time are some of Gainesville’s finest musicians and performers. They include John Sterling Lodge (keyboards and vocals), George Gomez (acoustic guitar and vocals), Rickylee Brawner (lead guitar) and Lavelle Whitfield (percussion). Special guests include Cindy Kitchens (vocals), Tom Holtz (guitar), Little Jake Mitchell (vocals), The Silversonic Horns (Brian Stevens - trombone, Doug Myers - trumpet, Charlie Blade - saxophone) and The Lovely Miss Ruth (backup vocals).

Whitley continues “If you’re an aging hippie seeking nostalgia, an inquisitive millennial wondering what the Woodstock fuss was, or a young music lover filling in some blanks, it’s all wrapped up in 120 minutes of fun at Bo Diddley Plaza Friday, July 12, 2019.

The Summer of ’69: Fifty Years On concert is one of the select “Free Fridays” classic rock concerts that are sponsored by classic rock radio station WIND-FM (92.5, 95.5, 107.9).

Yoga with Tan

Join Tan Shakti (RYT) for a relaxing open air yoga class in the plaza. This class is based on the ancient fitness science of hatha yoga which integrates mind, body, energy, and breath. We will practice basic postures/exercises that focus on core strength, flexibility and balance as well as concentration and breath control.
All levels, including beginners are welcome to join. Dress comfortably, bring your yoga mat, and any props you may need.
This class is taught for free, donations appreciated.
