Transgender Day of Remembrance, also known as TDOR, serves to raise public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, especially transgender women of color, and mourn and honor the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten. This day also provides an opportunity for everyone to step forward and stand in vigil, memorializing those who have died by anti-transgender violence.

Transgender Day of Remembrance was started November 20th, 1999 as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman of color who was killed in November of 1998.
