GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The band Pine will play at the “Free Fridays” Concert Series at Bo Diddley Plaza in downtown Gainesville Friday, July 20 from 8-10 p.m.
Liberty Phoenix and Dan Stepp came together to create a folky sound with intimate harmonies that are supported with a beautifully talented string band. Pine is not named after the tree, but stands for pining, such as pining away for a lost love. With lovingly crafted melodies and lyrics, all of Pine’s songs are written by the band members. Pine recently sold out a concert at the Hippodrome Theatre, and was featured at the Gamble Rogers Music Festival and at the Florida Folk Festival.
All of the Pine band members are locally-based and highly-regarded musicians who also play or have played in multiple bands. Liberty Phoenix (singer/songwriter) has sung with Papercranes, Funkiller and Venus and the Moon. Daniel Stepp, (guitar/singer/songwriter) has played in Hard Luck Society, Ramblin’ Mutts and Whiskey & Co. Brian Turk (standup bass) also plays with Wild Shiners, Wax Wings and Uncle Mosie. Andrew Cook (violin) is trained classically, but is also an award-winning old time and bluegrass fiddler. He plays in Wild Shiners, the Thin Skins, Nook & Cranny and Hard Luck Society. Mark Archer (dobro) has played with Andrew Cook in myriad bands for more than 17 years, and Cook also plays in Archer’s electric heavy western band the Thin Skins.
“Free Fridays” is funded in part by a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council and Culture Builds Florida.
