"Free Fridays" Concert Series: Crooked Counsel / A Tribute to the Music of Santana & Janis Joplin

Crooked Counsel.jpg

Crooked Counsel has been in the Gainesville music scene since 1994, and is known for its wide variety of high energy rock ‘n’ roll. Known for their diversity, the band plays a wide range of music from artists of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. This includes Santana, Janis Joplin, The Beatles, James Brown, The Allman Brothers Band, Sam & Dave, Roy Orbison, Stevie Wonder, The Marshall Tucker Band and Eric Clapton, as well as some more current material such as Adele, Tracy Chapman, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, U2, The Black Crowes, David Bowie, Pink and many more.

For their “Free Fridays” concert, Crooked Counsel is excited to put on a concert showcasing two of their favorite artists, Santana and Janis Joplin. These artists are two of the band’s biggest influences. Rick Hutton’s (lead guitar/vocals) smooth style on guitar is perfect for Santana’s material and the band’s repertoire already included a number of Santana tunes, so it has been exciting to add new ones for the tribute concert. Shuri Pass (vocals/acoustic guitar) has been singing Janis Joplin songs for years, and the band never gives a performance that the crowd does not put in exuberant requests for Joplin. Since the two artists are from the same music era, the band felt that a tribute concert to honor them would be both a lot of fun, and something the Crooked Counsel fans would love.

Joining Hutton and Pass in the Crooked Counsel line-up are John Middleton (keys/second guitar/ vocals), Yomi Olatunde (bass/back-up vocals) and Donnie Ray Henley (drums).
