GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The “Free Fridays” Concert Series presents a tribute to the music of Woodstock and a tribute to the music of Jimi Hendrix at Bo Diddley Plaza Friday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. Opening the concert are The Relics, who were formed in 2009 to play a Woodstock 40th anniversary concert at “Free Fridays.” They will reprise a part of that show which still holds a “Free Fridays” attendance record of more than 3,000 attendees.
Led by Gainesville musician Bob McPeek (guitar/vocals), The Relics also feature Fagan Arouh (guitars), Janet Rucker, Cathy DeWitt, Dan Tampas and Michelle Ott (vocals), Brad Bangstad (keyboards), David Ottenberg (bass) and Rob Rothschild (drums). The Relics play legendary songs of The Who, Sly and the Family Stone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Arlo Guthrie, Crosby, Stills, and Nash and The Kinks.
The second half of the concert features a tribute to the music of Jimi Hendrix by Michael Derry and Friends. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame called Hendrix, "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music." His mainstream career spanned only four years, but his proficiency and experimental style on the electric guitar earned him the reputation as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time.
Michael Derry says, “His music defied category. Hendrix said, ‘My music isn't pop, it's me. My guitar is my notes, regardless of where they came from. I have not set out to produce a commercial sound...’ And he didn't. In this performance, we hope to share a glimmer of his extraordinary talents and his fun.”
Michael Derry (guitar/vocals) is joined by Ray Minter (guitar/vocals), Scott Free (guitar/vocals), Mick Marino (guitar/vocals), Ron Thomas (bass/vocals), Larry Thompson (drums) and Brad Bangstad (keyboards).
The Woodstock and Hendrix concert is one of the select “Free Fridays” classic rock concerts that are sponsored by classic rock radio station WIND-FM (92.5, 95.5, 107.9).
